CPU Upgrade:
Getting the AMD K6-2+ / K6-III+ to work on your Super Socket 7 board.

by Jan Steunebrink
Last updated on December 21, 2023

Introduction

The latest, and probably last, editions to the Socket 7 scene are AMD's K6-2+ and K6-III+ CPUs. Although AMD designed these CPUs for the mobile market, they will work in compatible desktops as well. For details about these CPUs, see AMD's web-site.
Availability of these CPUs may be a problem now most stocks are depleted. So you may have to revert to the second-hand market or to internet auction houses like eBay.

To be able to run these babies in your desktop, the motherboard should have the following features:

CPU Core Voltage

The K6-2+/III+ CPU core is designed to run on 2.0V but also runs well on 2.1V.
The absolute maximum Vcore rating is 2.2V, but this is already stressing the CPU and will probably shorten its life span.
On motherboards with 4 Vcore jumpers, the lowest possible Vcore setting of 2.0V is usually selected by taking all 4 jumpers off. I have found that several boards didn't work with this setting and that the next higher setting of 2.1V had to be used to properly run the K6-2+/III+.
There are also (ultra) low power 1.6V - 1.8V versions of the K6plus, designed for embedded fan-less applications. I believe that these low voltage versions use the same 0.18 micron die as the faster 2.0V models and experience shows that they will run fine at 2.0V or 2.1V as well. However when run at 2.0V, they will behave like other K6plus 2.0V versions and will need a cooler/fan, but they will also run faster then.

Front Side Bus

The K6-2+/III+ CPUs are designed for a 100MHz FSB but can also run on a lower busspeed. Because the maximum multiplier for these CPUs is 6, you are limited to 500MHz on a 83MHz FSB, 450MHz on a 75MHz FSB, and 400MHz on a 66MHz FSB.
Unfortunately, boards without 100MHz support have almost never K6-2+/III+ BIOS support and the older 66/75 MHz boards often lack the 2.0V or 2.1V Vcore setting. So this page focuses mainly on support for the 100MHz Super Socket 7 platform, but I will include other boards when possible.

K6plus BIOS Support

Below are two tables with Socket 7 board BIOSes. The first table lists BIOSes that already have K6-2+/III+ support as provided by the motherboard manufacturer. Because most manufacturers pages for these socket 7 boards are gone now, the Download link allows you to download the BIOS directly from this site.
This list is followed by a second table that lists boards for which a Patched BIOS is available.

If you have a board for which no K6plus aware BIOS is available, or if you don't want to use a patched BIOS, there are other solutions to get the K6-2+/III+ running. Read this Tyan S1590 and the AMD K6-III+ article by Michael McCarrick for further information. The findings presented here will work on most motherboards.

Note that if you want to run a K6plus on a board with the Intel 430TX, 430VX, ALi Aladdin IV(+), or SiS5582 chipset, you may have to set "System BIOS Cacheable" in the CMOS Setup to "Disable" to get it working.

The Award BIOS 32GB HDD limit bug

Apart from K6-2+/III+ support, most BIOSes in the below lists will also have a fix for the 32GB HDD limit bug.

The story:
In 1996/1997, Award Software Inc. put the Interrupt 13h extensions with 28-bit LBA support in their BIOSes. This was done to break the 8GB HDD barrier, so that IDE drives up to 128GB could be supported. But they overlooked a bug that caused the BIOS to hang during POST when a 32GB or larger drive was attached. Later on, also a 64GB limit bug was discovered.
Initially, these bugs went unnoticed but became apparent when 40GB and larger drives came on the market.

The official fix:
Finally, in its September 1999 and later BIOS releases, Award properly fixed these bugs and provided native 128GB HDD support. This fix allowed even larger drives up to 640GB to be attached but the BIOS then only "sees" the first 128GB of that drive due to the limits of the LBA28 interface.

But there is a workaround for this 128GB limit for these late 1999/2000-2003 Award BIOSes. When all code and data to boot the OS is placed in a partition below the 128GB limit, the whole drive can be accessed by a 48-bit LBA capable OS after bootup! (Like Win2000 with SP3 or higher, WinXP with SP1 or higher, Vista or later, or Linux with kernel 2.4.19 or later.)

Note that to fully break the 128GB barrier, you need a BIOS with 48-bit LBA support but these came later in 2004, after the ATA-6 specification was published in 2003. This was too late for the Socket 7 platform and I have never seen an LBA48 BIOS update for socket 7.

All Award BIOSes, except one (Biostar M5ALC), in the first "K6plus BIOS List" below have the HDD limit bugs fixed by Award and fully support these 128GB(640GB) drives.

The community fix:
Back in 2002, when I learned that another BIOS patcher found a fix for the infamous Award 32GB HDD limit bug, I started to use that fix in my patched K6+ BIOSes as well. His name is Petr Soucek and he uses a simple and elegant 15 bytes patch to fix this bug.
He also describes a more elaborate patch for the 64GB limit bugs that I am using as well. An archived version of his website, with a detailed explanation, can be found at web.archive.org/web/20071114220315/http://www.ryston.cz/petr/bios/

These same patches are also used in all patched BIOSes by the Wimsbios team, and team member Rainbow still has these BIOSes available at http://wims.rainbow-software.org/

However, all these patched BIOSes hang during POST when a drive with 267,386,880 or more sectors (127.5GB) is attached. This new limit is a side-effect of the code used in the patch and coincides nicely with the 28-bit LBA limit. So this was of no consequence at the time, until bigger drives (with 48-bit LBA support) like 160GB and 200GB came on the market.

A new community fix:
In 2007 I started looking into the code that Award itself used to fix the 32GB limit bug in late 1999/2000 BIOSes, and I found a way to use this logic to make a new bugfix for 1997/98/99 Socket 7 BIOSes. This new 32GB bugfix uses 32-bit arithmetic (instead of 16-bit) to do the calculations, thereby avoiding a divide overflow at 127.5GB. The new limit for this fix is 640GB, just like in Awards official fix, although the BIOS will still only 'see' the first 127.5GB due to the 28-bit LBA limitation.

After testing this new 32GB bugfix for quite a while, I have now put it in several patched BIOSes. In the Patched BIOS list below, you can recognize these BIOSes by a 128GB(640GB) indication in the Remarks column.

CAUTION: Always follow the BIOS flash procedure from the motherboard manufacturer.
